Chelsea 1- 2 Manchester Carbao Cup 4th round match review



Chelsea faced arch rivals  Manchester United in the fourth round of Carbao Cup on 30th October.It was 185th competitive fixture held between Chelsea and Manchester United with the clubs facing off in the League cup for the 6th time .  Chelsea Boss Frank Lampard  opted to go for a  4-3-3 formation with the veteran goalkeeper Willy Caballero starting ahead of the first choice  goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The back four  included regular feature  Kurt Zouma along with Young Centre back Marc Guehi, Marcos Alonso was again an obvious choice in the absence of Emerson who has been sidelined due to an injury Reece James got the nod over Chelsea club captain Cesar Azpilicueta. The 3 man midfield included the newly sworn in Chelsea vice captain Jorginho who led the squad for the first time in the absence of captain Cesar Azpilicueta along with Matteo Kovacic and young sensation Billy Gilmour. Chelsea's attack was poised with  Christian Pulisic and Hudson Odoi starting on the wings with Michy Batshuayi upfront who was rewarded with a start for his recent performances  . On the other hand the under pressure Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to go for a well balanced 3-4-1-2 with  Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Rojo as the three centre backs. New signing Aaron wan- Bissaka and youngster Brandon  williams as wing backs formed a part of Manchester United Midfield along with  two holding midfielders  Scott Mctominay and  Fred . Jesse Lingard played a more offensive role as an attacking midfielder  along with  the two  centre forwards Daniel James and Marcus Rashford


Chelsea dominated the possession having 63% of the ball in the first 15 mins but it was the visitors who took the lead after Daniel James was awarded a controversial  penalty after being bundled over in the penalty box courtesy of his tussle with Chelsea left back Marcos Alonso. It was Marcus Rashford who stepped up to take the penalty and scored the only goal of the first half. Chelsea forwards had a hard time getting past United defence in the first half due to an impressive performance from the Manchester united defenders.Chelsea looked dangerous in the second half and  did get their equalizer at the hour mark when Michy Batshuayi finished of a sensational solo run with a low line drive from 20 yards to make it 1-1. It was Marcus Rashford who stole the show with a thunderous free kick that swerved over the wall and dipped past Willy Caballero to provide United with a victory over the Blues.

  1. Marcus Rashford was  the key man for Manchester United scoring 2 goals and constantly causing a threat two Chelsea defence by creating a good link up with his fellow centre forward Daniel James and  attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard 
  2. Scott Mctominay was the most dominant Manchester United player on the field keeping a tight hold on Chelsea forwards and also  making confident runs through the middle to help build an attack
  3.  Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams  also put up decent performances by keeping a compact backline allowing verry little space for Chelsea forwards to create an attack

  1.  Michy Batshuayi was the only goal scorer for Chelsea fetching an equalizer for the blues at one hour mark 
  2. Jorginho and Kovacic were the key men for Chelsea in the midfield with Jorginho winning 3 out of 4 tackles making 6 interceptions and 13 recoveries and Kovacic completing all 5 of his takeons 
  3.  Reece James was another key performer for Chelsea with an impressive  work rate helping his team with his defensive attributes as well as his offensive skills with his good low crosses in the enemy territory
